The Boy Who Loved Maps Written by Kari Allen & Illustrated by G. Brian Karas

It is no surprise to me that Kari Allen is a second grade teacher. Her book, “The Boy Who Loved Maps” (2022) is the perfect book for preschool and elementary school children. I have always loved maps - perhaps because they offered me an easy and visually-appealing way to daydream during class. So, this book immediately jumped into my arms during my regular library visit. In this picture book, a girl goes to visit a boy named “The Mapmaker.” She asks him to make her a map “of a perfect place.” She describes what this place looks, smells and feels like. The Mapmaker gets to work on her map straightaway, but every drawing is a bit off - not perfect. She decides to take him exploring. After a visit to the local library, the town bakery, and the park, they both realize exactly how to craft the perfect map.

Heart: The ending is so lovely - the boy and the girl work together to draw the map “they both needed.” It is a map of their neighborhood. I love that the playground is the heart of their map and takes up the bulk of the space. This is truly a map made with a kid’s perspective in mind. I love the message that sometimes the most perfect things are simple and right outside your front door.

Head: The back matter in this book is excellent! Kari gives a detailed list on how to make a map of your neighborhood. She also offers a variety of map activities. My favorite option is the memory map! While reading the last page with your children, take a close look at “The Mapmaker’s” bag. It has various tools the kids use for their map- protractor, compass, and ruler. I cannot wait to try these activities with my children.
