Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson (2019)
Truth be told, I don’t have much to say this week.
Laurie Halse Anderson is a spectacular middle grade and young adult author. For middle grade, I recommend Fever 1793 - a historical fiction book and for YA, I recommend Speak.
Yet, this week’s recommendation is for you - the adults. I encourage you to read her poetry memoir, Shout. Laurie Halse Anderson is a sexual assault survivor. She has spent much of her life advocating for sexual assault survivors. Her poems shed light and inspire.
Heart & Head: A quote from my all-time favorite author and activist, Bryan Stevenson, “It is about how easily we condemn people in this country and the injustice we create when we allow fear, anger, and distance to shape the way we treat the most vulnerable among us.” If you have time, I recommend adding Just Mercy to your must-read list.
