If You Come To Earth by Sophie Blackall

So often simplicity is the key to capturing a child’s sense of wonder. Sophie Blackall masters this simple, yet stunningly beautiful synopsis of Earth in her picture book, “If You Come To Earth” (2020). There is so much I love about this book - as a parent, as a teacher, and as an Earth-loving empath. Sophie Blackall lovingly dedicated this book to all of the children she met in her role as an ambassador for Save the Children and UNICEF and her dedication meets the mark. Her gorgeous illustrations and simple text show children how beautiful and delicate this Earth is - a thing worth caring for. I give this book as first birthday, baby shower, and teacher appreciation day gifts! It is a favorite in our house!

Heart: Take time to discuss with your children how we are all different. Mustafa’s mole may be the only physical thing that distinguishes him from his twin, but how do our emotions and thoughts make us different? The pages with braille and sign language illustrations are a great jumping off point for a discussion on our different ways of communicating.

Head: As a social studies teacher and engaged world citizen, I am concerned about the effects of climate change, particularly on developing nations. The page “We live in all kinds of homes” shows a small illustration of people who have lost their homes in fire, flood and war. This picture book could be used as a springboard for a classroom that is taking a deeper dive into these issues. .
