How to Raise a Rhino by Deb Aronson

Joining Illinois’s SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) chapter 3 years ago was the best decision for me as I embarked on my children’s book writing journey. I’ve learned so much through the webinars and I’ve met so many inspiring people, like my writing coach and critique partner. When I heard that Deb Aronson, one of our Illinois SCBWI leaders, wrote a STEAM middle grade book, I was eager to read and review it. “How to Raise a Rhino” by Deb Aronson is the perfect book for teens who love animals, care about the preservation of natural spaces, or love a daring woman determined to live her most authentic life. This biography of Anna Merz takes you from her early moments in post- World War II London to mostly the 1980’s and 1990’s in Kenya as Anna worked to develop a black rhino sanctuary. You will be captivated as you read about Anna rescuing a newborn rhino, Samia, from near-death and her relationship with Samia in the years that follow. It takes a very special person to devote their life to a rhino sanctuary.

Heart: Mr. Fred Rogers always said, “Look for the helpers.” Anna Merz was most certainly one of those helpers. In my daily life I meet exceptional “helpers” everyday: from a fellow church parishioner who spends most of his hours leading our church food pantry, to the gun violence prevention activists I volunteer with, to the North Chicago Community Partners employees and volunteers who strive for educational equity. Keep your eyes peeled for all of these people! And remind our children to keep their eyes peeled.

Head: Deb Aronson believes in highlighting “everyday people” who are doing exceptional things. I am really glad she took time to investigate the life of Anna Merz and share her story. If I were teaching in the classroom, I would have my students research one “everyday person” who is doing exceptional things. They could share their research as a podcast or essay. I envision something like my favorite segment, Unsung Heroes on NPR.
